- MISSING ANIMAL

If your animal is missing, please click on the link below to submit a report. Once submitted, all of our Animal Protection Deputies will receive an email with your animal’s details. Our staff will notify you if your animal is brought to the shelter or if we receive a call about it.

To help us identify your animal quickly, please include a recent picture with your report.

We also strongly recommend that you visit the shelter in person to check for your pet, as this is the best way to ensure they are not already in our care.

What to do if you find a pet.

-  If the pet is wearing identification, please reach out to the owner using the contact information on the tag.

-  Call your local animal control/protection office to report that you have found an animal. Give a detailed description and submit a photo if possible. Municipal animal control offices are usually the first place an owner will look when his or her pet is missing.

-  Virginia requires a statutory holding period for stray animals to give owners the opportunity to reclaim their pets. Should you prefer to observe this stray period, which varies by locality, in your home rather than at the shelter, first notify the municipal animal control/protection for the locality where the animal was found and follow the agency’s instructions.

-  Report the pet you’ve found to private animal welfare agencies. Most private shelters, including the Richmond SPCA, do not house strays but do keep records of lost and found reports. Contact us at 804-521-1300 or email us.

-  Check your neighborhood’s website and social media for lost pet reports and post your own found report. Withholding an identifying characteristic from the description can help you verify that the person claiming the pet is the rightful owner.

-  Make flyers to post in the area where the pet was found. Check with neighbors to see if they recognize the pet. This template will help you quickly make a poster to print and share online.

-  Take the pet to a veterinarian or animal control/protection office to be scanned for a microchip. If the pet appears to be injured and needs emergency veterinary attention, take him or her to Virginia Veterinary Centers or another emergency hospital. Identify the pet as a stray and notify VVC of where you found the pet (city or county).

WILDLIFE

What to do with Wildlife?

The New Kent Sheriff’s Office, Animal Protection Unit, will assist if you find an injured or possibly rabid wild animal. All other wildlife calls will be forwarded to the Department Of Wildlife Resources.

If you are currently experiencing an issue with nuisance wildlife, please contact the wildlife conflict line at 1-855-571-9003

More often than not, handling injured, sick, or orphaned wildlife can do more harm than good. Although our intentions are well-meaning, human interaction with wildlife should always be kept to a minimum. Humans often misinterpret normal wildlife behavior as abnormal and may unnecessarily disturb and stress wild animals by attempting to catch them.

Injured or Orphaned Mammals

Often, particularly in spring, concerned people pick up animals that they think are orphaned. More than 75 percent of such orphans “rescued” every spring should have been left alone. Most wild animals are dedicated parents and will not abandon their young, but they do leave them alone for long periods of time while looking for food. Additionally, many behaviors that people may view as abnormal actually are not in wildlife, and people may do much more harm than good by attempting to catch them for rehabilitation. Unless one of these guidelines applies, leave wildlife alone.

First, ensure it is truly injured or orphaned. Sometimes a parent is close by but waiting for the human intruder to leave. Other times, a dazed or unconscious animal is only temporarily stunned. The kindest thing you can do for these animals is keep them out of the way of predators by placing them in a box or an elevated place.

Second, if the animal is hurt and you are able and willing to pick it up, do so with care (this includes heavy gloves), handling it as little as possible and keeping your hands away from its mouth (there is always potential for rabies among wild animals). Place the animal in a well-ventilated cardboard box in a dark, quiet, warm place. Do not feed it. Call a rehabilitation facility and follow their instructions. Do not attempt to rescue skunks or bats. These are high-risk animals that are potentially dangerous to your health. Never attempt to capture an adult sick or injured mammal. They are frightened and/or in pain and see you as a threat and can bite severely.

If a fawn or rabbit has been “rescued” when it shouldn’t have been, it can often be released at the same location — if it is on the same day. Parents tend to remain in the area for at least a day, looking for the lost youngster. Leave him as close as possible to where he was found and withdraw at least 50 yards and observe with binoculars until dusk. If the parent hasn’t picked up the little one by nightfall, you will need to contact

a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
